Deaf Smith Electric Cooperative (DSEC) has awarded $22,000 in scholarship money to students in its service territory, including three from Castro County.

DSEC’s board of directors granted 11 scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each. These scholarships are available to immediate families of active members and active employees of DSEC.

Castro County students receiving scholarships include: Liset Martinez, Dimmitt High School. Liset is the daughter of Enrique and Elizabeth Martinez. She plans to attend Texas A&M University and major in pre-vet/ animal science with a goal to become a veterinarian.

Kattey Gerber, Nazareth High School. Kattey is the daughter of Marty and Tisha Gerber. She plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in human/health sciences. She plans to work in the healthcare field.

Tanner Wethington, Nazareth High School. Tanner is the son of Justin and Kandal Wethington. He plans to attend West Texas A&M University and major in agribusiness. He plans to become a livestock nutritionist or ag medicine salesman after graduation.

Students outside Castro County receiving scholarships include Braden Brorman, Vega High School; Jacee Burney, Lynlee Spinhirne, Dieter Alley and Jarret White, Friona High School; and Aron Diaz and Natalia Rodriguez, Hereford High School.

Since the program began back in 1998, DSEC has awarded more than $450,000 in scholarships to members across the cooperative’s system. Funds for these scholarships come from our Operation Round Up program, where members can “round up” their bill to the next dollar, and a portion of escheated funds from the State of Texas.
