Yuletide decorative flourishes abound here inside Rhoads Memorial Library as we have completed our holiday look.

If you are in the midst of decorating your home and come across books or movies that you no longer want, you may wish to donate them to us for our upcoming book sale. That annual event will be held in our meeting room from Jan. 23-31, 2024.

But first we must see what December offers. Young Scientists’ take-and-make kits feature “Snowstorm in a Jar” and are sure to go fast. They were created by local county agent, Felice Acker, of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. We serve as the distribution center for the popular kits and thank her for offering them.

Acker also led a big crowd of Dimmitt youngsters who assembled in our meeting room last Friday for 4-H activity. She presented each of them with gingerbread-like houses made from graham crackers; the youngsters decorated them with various types of candies, crackers, and nonpareils.

The group proceeded into the library proper where she read them a book about the gingerbread man. Acker hopes to have another session in January 2024; watch this space and Castro County 4-H’s Facebook page for details.

Dave’s Tech Talk continues to be held each Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. in our meeting room. Dave Nelson, assisted by Skip Skinner, is available to answer your questions or solve problems presented by tablets, iPads, computers, and cell phones.

Our friends at Unger Memorial Library in Plainview informed us of a Christmas Concert they are hosting at the Fair Theatre in that city. “A Brief History of Christmas Music” by Andy Mason will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12,, and the public is invited. Fair Theatre is located at 717 Broadway Street in Plainview.

Sandy Haney is slated to be the guest speaker at Dimmitt Book Club’s meeting to be held in our meeting room on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. The Canyon author has written a book of Christian poetry titled, “Sand Crab Sentiments” along with books of Christian non-fiction. The meeting is open to the public.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”Alex Cross Must Die” (a thriller) by James Patterson; -”The Ball at Versailles” (a novel) by Danielle Steel; -”Catfish Charlie” (a Western) by William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone; -”Murder Checks Out” (a Blue Ridge Library mystery) by Victoria Gilbert.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
