Tuesday, Feb. 20, is the date set for a “Cooking Well With Diabetes” class here at Rhoads Memorial Library. It will be held from noon until 1 p.m. in our meeting room and will be led by Courtney Lowe, Health Extension Agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Lunch will be served, so attendees need to RSVP by calling 806-485-9135. The class is designed to help people with diabetes and anyone who prepares food for them. Three more classes are scheduled for March 19, April 16, and May 14.

Also coming up this month is the meeting of Dimmitt Book Club, which will commence at 2 p.m. in our meeting room on Wednesday, Feb. 14. Youngsters exploring 4-H will gather in the room on Friday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. under the guidance of Felice Acker, local agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Since February is recognized as Black History Month, our display case offers items of interest ranging from the religious to the secular. Gwen Lewis and Joyce Thomas created the exhibit.

Our annual book sale, which ended Jan. 31, netted the most money since we started the event in 2013. Volunteers who manned the checkout table were Pat Bagley, Mary Ruth Baird, Genell Craig, Karen Durham, Avis Smith, and Carolyn Watts. We thank them profusely for giving their time and energy as many books, audio books, magazines, movies, and other items were sold and found new homes. The proceeds will enable us to buy new items for our patrons to checkout.

Additionally, we are very appreciative of those who brought us books and other items to feature in our sale. We thank you for your generosity.

We kept two donated books that are set in World War II and added them to our collection for checkout. The 2018 releases include: -”The Dutch Wife” by Ellen Keith, which begins in Amsterdam in 1943. Marijke de Graaf and her husband are arrested and deported to two different concentration camps in Germany. Marijke is presented with a terrible choice: suffer a slow death in the labor camp or, for a chance at survival, join the camp brothel.
