Hegar distributes $977M in sale tax revenue

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $977.2 million in local sales tax allocations for April, 12.8 percent more than in April 2022.

These allocations are based on sales made in February by businesses that report tax monthly.

Castro County received $18,173, an increase of 7.23% over the same period in 2022.

Dimmitt received $33,076, an increase of 10.51%; and Nazareth, $5,318, an increase of 57.34%.

Hart lost ground, receiving $3,750, a decrease of -31.99% from the previous year.

Overall, cities received $615 million, up by 11.5% during the same period in 2022; counties, $61 million, up by 16.9%; transit systems,

$210 million, up by 13%; and special purpose districts, $90 million, up by 18.5%.

The largest source of state funding for the state budget is sales tax, accounting for

56% of all tax collections, followed by the franchise tax (primary business tax) and motor vehicle related taxes.
