Flex Fitness and Nutrition last Thursday received a check for $10,000 from the Dimmitt Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) through the Small Business Incentive Program grant program.

Owners of the business, Yvonne and Ramon Aguero, received the check presented by DECE board members Matt Gfeller, president, Maggi Lytle, vice president, Callen Edwards, treasurer, and JoAnna Blanco, secretary, and Joyce Thomas, board member.

The new business will be located at 116 W. Bedford and will provide a physical fitness center and offer workouts and a tasty menu of various protein shakes, coffee and tea.

According to City Manager Daniel Jackson, the Dimmitt Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) has been granted authority to undertake Type B economic development projects as authorized by Texas Local Government Code ยง 504.171. The Small Business Incentive Program is designed to incentivize the growth and expansion of small businesses located in Dimmitt.

The DEDC allocated $10,000 for the Small Business Incentive Program for the remainder of fiscal year 2023-2024. Grants are competitive and will be awarded until funds are depleted. The DEDC Board of Directors may amend, adjust, or eliminate the program at any time, however commitments made to approved applications will be final.

Jackson said each application is reviewed by city staff and considered by the DEDC board of directors for approval. Consideration for approval will generally take place at a regularly scheduled meeting or special meeting. A grant request that is not approved will be accompanied by a reason for denial, and businesses may reapply after 30 days if the business addresses the reason for grant denial in the new application.

According to grant specifi cs, work shall not commence on any project seeking grant funds until the grant has been approved by DEDC and must be completed within 180 days from the approval for the grant. A business that operates in a building it does not own must have specific authorization from the property owner to apply for a reimbursement grant.
