A fundraiser led by non- profit Homeless Heroes in Amarillo is gearing up for its project, “Hatch Homes for Heroes.” The organization faces a closing date in May to purchase the old Astro Motel to house homeless veterans and needs about $565,000, of which half has been raised. Homeless Heroes goal is to convert the 20 units into 12 to 15 one-bedroom apartments with some on-location services. The location is directly across the street from the Amarillo VA, where veterans have access to other resources they need.
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Friday there will be a drive-in fundraiser where people can stop by and drive through the existing property. The Astro Motel is located at 5703 W Amarillo Boulevard.
Another event is set for Saturday at Laird Insurance Agency at 1722 S Western Street.
