Dorothy Marie Mayfield,

Dorothy Marie Mayfield, 87 and longtime resident of Dimmitt, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, in Denton, Texas. Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, Feb. 9 at First Baptist Church of Dimmitt at 2 p.m. with Coby Gil-breath and Brother Jonathan Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Hart Cemetery in Hart, Texas. Arrangements are being made by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.

Dorothy was born to Edgar Ireland and Bertie McLain in Denton, Texas on Dec.30, 1931. She was raised and attended school in Hart and business school in Plainview. In 1951 she married Herb Mayfield in Hart and later moved to Dimmitt.

She was a loving wife and mother to three children. She enjoyed tole painting and teaching others the same. She earned her Life Master in Duplicate Bridge and enjoyed the bridge club.

She was a member of the Ladies Garden Club and cared for her garden with passion. She taught Sunday school and served on the new building committee for the existing First Baptist Church. She shared Herb’s passion for bluegrass music, donated to South Plains College in Levelland, Texas for student scholarships, and supported Boys Ranch.

Dorothy operated a bed and breakfast out of her home and had a custom interior design business.

She is survived by her three children, Marla Gerdes and her husband Kelvin of Denton, Texas, Bryan Mayfield of Oakland, California, and Britt Mayfield and his wife Missy from Vernon, Texas; and two grandchildren, Melynn Mayfield and Devin Mayfield. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herb; and one brother and one sister.
