DISD honors local veterans

Dimmitt High School held its annual Veterans Day Program with a theme “No One Fights Alone” on Nov. 11 at the DHS gymnasium. The DHS Student Council and numerous student organizations helped honor local veterans.

The day began with a ceremony at Richardson Elementary and the colors posted by the Castro County Sheriff’s Office deputies Caylan Vasquez and Sgt. Joe Balderrama and two veterans. A flag was sent to RES by Greer Estes’ niece, Kathy Johnston. It was presented to Greer’s parents after he was killed in action in World War 2. Greer Estes and Helen Richardson were brother and sister. Richardson Elementary is named for Helen.

Greer was born June 29, 1913, in Dimmitt and lived most of his life in Castro County. He graduated from Dimmitt High School in 1930. He answered the call of his country in 1941, did his basic training at Camp Bowie and later received an officer’s commission. He was assigned to the U.S. Army Headquarters Company of 313th Infantry, 79th Division. He was killed in action during the Normandy invasion in July 1944.
