It isn’t just the elections that are nearing, but also the upcoming Texas Legislature’s 88th session in just four months, when state lawmakers will spend 140 days trying to sort out the issues in Texas.
More than a dozen legislative leaders attended and spoke at the Texas Tribune Festival recently, outlining their vision and goals for the state. Republicans will likely control state government, giving them an opportunity to further a conservative agenda. Among numerous issues is immigration and the border, abortion and education.
With Gov. Greg Abbott’s decision to bus migrants to major Democratic-lead cities, the move came as record numbers of crossings were occurring at the U.S.-Mexico border. Abbot has sent more than 10,000 to Washington, D.C. New York City and Chicago. The action drew praise from Republican leaders across the country and complaints from Democrats in those cities.
