The Texas Commission on Jail Standards conducted an unannounced annual state jail inspection of the Castro County Jail on Dec. 15 with good results.

According to Sheriff Sal Rivera, the jail was inspected on the following areas: new and existing construction, life safety, admission, release, records/procedures, classification, health services, supervision, personal hygiene, sanitation, food service, discipline, grievance, exercise, education/library, work assignments, telephones, correspondence, commissary, visitation and religious practices.

Rivera said there was one technical assistance issue that was found by the jail inspector, which was corrected on site while the inspector was still at the jail.

“Our jail inspection went very well and the jail inspector was very complimentary on how the jail looked and how the jail staff was taking care of the facility,” said Sheriff Rivera. “Even though this facility is over three years old, we strive to maintain a secured facility at all times.”

Those present to meet with the Jail Inspector Jason Jouettl were Sheriff Sal Rivera, County Judge Carroll Gerber, Chief Deputy Michael Pantoja, Jail Administrator Mary Ewing and Jail Lt. Eric Enriquez.

“I want to commend Capt. Mary Ewing and her staff for doing a great job in running the county jail and keeping it in compliance with the standards set by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards,” said Sheriff Rivera. “I want to also thank the Castro County Commissioners Court for always being attentive to the needs of the county jail.”

The jail facility is located at 900 E. Bedford Street in the Castro County Law Enforcement Center. The jail is a 49-bed facility capable of holding up to 64 with the holding and detox cells.

The jail staff consist of Capt. Ewing, Lt. Eric Enriquez and jailers Fabian Salinas, Anyssa Enriquez, Marissa Jackson, Cortez Valdez, Brennon Garcia, Skyla Elisondo and Pablo Salas.
