A lot of great bluegrass music is coming to town in November with what will hopefully become a tradition.

Thanks to organizer David Nelson, the Dimmitt Bluegrass Festival will bring things alive on Nov. 11-12 at the Castro County Expo Center.

There will be eight bands from across Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma, with one-hour sets for a total of 18 hours of live music.

Food will be served from the Expo Center kitchen by David Cisneros and his wife from Friona, who have garnered great reviews for their menu and cooking. More info can be found at Thehub Cisneros on Facebook.

Hours for the event are 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, and 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. Wristbands will be provided at the door for easy entry and exit.

Texas Bluegrass was born in Dimmitt, when The Mayfield Brothers brought it to town in the 1930s. A lot of history can be found in the book, “Texas Bluegrass History.”

Traditional Bluegrass music was born in the Appalachian Mountains in states like West Virginia, Arkansas, and others, by some of the poorest people in our country who struggled to build their own cabins and barns with no electricity or running water, just hoping to feed their families.

But every once in a while, friends and family would get together on someone’s front porch or barn and bring their home-made instruments – banjos, guitars, mandolins, upright basses, dobro’s, washtubs, saws - singers and musicians created bluegrass music. They’d stomp their feet and dance and enjoy the fellowship. For a brief time, they had smiles on their faces and were happy.

Now that same kind of happiness can be found at the Dimmitt Bluegrass Festival with such performers as the Provincials, The Lunas, Wichita Mountain Bluegrass, Flatland Bluegrass, Pickin’ on the Plains and others.

In that light, Nelson said he hopes that the community will come out and enjoy the event for some great music, food and fellowship.

Bring some $20’s from the ATM for hours of live entertainment - $40 per person per day, $60 for both days. Advance ticket sales are available at: buytickets.at/novemberbluegrass/ 772388.
