The search for a city manager ended Monday when the Dimmitt City Council unanimously selected Daniel Jackson from the 21 applicants who applied for the position.

Following the resignation by B.J. Potts, who had served as city manager for eight years, the city signed an interlocal governmental contract for professional services with the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission to do a search for a city manager. Jackson was named acting city manager during that search.

After reviewing the applications, Mayor Roger Malone said Jackson is as qualified for the position and “already knows Dimmitt, the people and issues facing the issues.”

Jackson has been a Dimmitt police officer and assistant police chief for several years and comes with a lot of experience as well a degree from WTAMU. Malone said he is well equipped for undertaking the job of managing the city and will be attending a certification program for the position.

Even before being selected as city manager, Jackson was providing detailed reports to the city council and mayor and making determinations for what are normally holiday events in Dimmitt, with plans to run a firetruck with Santa Claus around neighborhoods rather than have large down town gatherings of people, given the surge in COVID-19.

Malone said Jackson is careful in planning, especially with the city facing so many current challenges.

“He is the right person for the job,” said Malone. “The council made the right decision.”
