DISD approves accident insurance

The Dimmitt ISD board of trustees approved contracting with Health Special Risk, Inc (HSR) as the student accident provider for the school year 2022-2023.

Health Special Risk is one the nation’s leading underwriting managers for special risk and accident and health insurance and covers educational institutions for accidents as well as supervised student participation in sports and other activities.

In other business, Mike Huseman, DISD business manager and director of budget and finance, presented information on the purchase of laptop computers for DHS teachers. The board approved the purchase.

Stacy Boozer reviewed the instructional materials allotment and TEKS certification for 2022-2023.TEKS are the current standards which outline what student what students are to learn in each course or grad and adopted by the State Board of Education and the State Board of Educator Certification standards for beginning educators. TEA recommends that LEAs submit the Allotment and TEKS Certification form by the end of May to ensure access to EMAT for the upcoming school year. The board approved the allotment and certification as presented.

In other business, the Hereford Wind II applied for a tax credit for taxes paid during the qualifying time period. The credit for the 2021-2022 tax year was credited from the project’s tax bill for 2021. DISD needed to apply for the tax credit reimbursement from TEA by May 31. Trustees approved the request for additional state aid for ad valorem tax credit as presented.

Superintendent Jill Millican gave a report to the board which included upcoming dates and activities for DISD.

Millican said a WTAMU Spring Workshop for board members is set for May 18 in Canyon and is both in-person and virtual.

Millican said there are several banquets for graduating students including the Church of Christ Senior Banquet on May 2; Baptist Church Senior Banquet on May 9; Catholic Church Senior Banquet, May 12; and Methodist Church Senior Lunch, May 13.

Additionally, the DHS graduation will be held on May 13 at 7 p.m.; and the 8th Grade Promotion on May 19 at 10 a.m.

The next regular board of trustees meeting is set for May 10 at noon.

DISD enrollment for the week ending May 25 was at 1,140, with 318 in DHS; 78 in First Steps; 481 in Richardson Elementary; and 263 in Dimmitt Middle School. The overall school student population is slightly down from 2020-2021 which was 1,159.
