DISD trustees approve insurance, tax credits

The Dimmitt ISD board of trustees met on Monday and approved student accident insurance, a bank depository contract, instructional materials allotment/TEKS certification.

Superintendent Jill Millican presented information and answered questions about student accident insurance for 2021-22. The board approved contracting with TEXAS Kids First as the student insurance provider.

In other action, the board approved extending the bank depository contract with First United Bank, which was set to end on June 30. By law the District has an option to extend the current contract for two years without requesting bids. The contract extension will go through 2023.

Stacy Boozer reviewed the Instructional Materials allotment and TEKS certification for 2021-22. The board approved it as presented.

The Hereford Wind II project applied for a tax credit for taxes during the qualifying time period. The credit for the 2020-21 tax year was credited from the project’s tax bill for 2020. The board approved requesting for additional state aid for ad valorem tax credit for the project as requested.

In other business, trustees accepted a bid of $800 for delinquent tax property located at Flagg. Chad Okamoto and Luis Nino entered the bid of $800 for the property.

Board member Clay Lytle recognized Carla Wooten’s years of service to the DISD Board of Trustees. Wooten’s term will expire in May and a new board member will be sworn in following the May 1 school board election.

With DISD business manager Becky Standlee retiring, the board hired Mike Huseman to resume her duties for that position. The board also approved numerous teacher’s contracts. Each April, school board training hours are announced for each trustee. All trustees met or exceeded the requirements.

Millican said the 2021 Summer Leadership Institute conference is scheduled for June 16-19 in San Antonio and June 23-26 in Fort Worth. There will be limited capacity, plus a virtual option. Districts may submit names for attendance and attendees will be chosen by lottery.

Millican made announcements to the board, including dates for the senior luncheons and graduations, as well as board leadership meetings/training coming up.

Senior luncheon/dinners will be held at the Church of Christ on May 3 at 6 p.m.; Catholic Church, May 6 at 6 p.m.; and the Baptist Church, May 10, 6 p.m.; and the Methodist Church, May 14, noon.

The DHS graduation will be held on May 14 at 7 p.m.; and 8th-grade promotion on May 18 at 10 a.m.

Enrollment for the week 26 of school for DISD was at 1,159 students, compared to the 2019-20 school at 1,215.
