If wintry precipitation is on your wishlist, just let us know here at Rhoads Memorial Library. It seems that the scheduling of our annual book sale brings about such a weather event, in the form of ice, snow, or a mixture. In fact, the first day of our sale, Tuesday, Jan. 24, did not get off to a great start as we were closed due to snowfall.

Castro County offices were closed that day, so we did, too, since we follow the county’s schedule. Consequently, if you need to visit the library on an icy or snowy day, call us at 806647-3532 to be sure we are open before you brave the elements. (Our book sale faced snowy weather last year, but to a lesser amount.)

We extended our sale through Feb. 1. If you were unable to attend, however, do not despair: our books, movies, and audiobooks have been moved to our storage area and may be viewed-and purchased--at any time of the year. Most are arranged alphabetically by author or by subject.

Rhonda Pletcher is scheduled to be the guest speaker at next week’s meeting of Dimmitt Book Club, which is set for Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. in our meeting room. The area author, formerly a teacher at Bushland, has written a children’s book titled, “Ants in My Plants.” Other artistic endeavors by Pletcher include a children’s CD, a religious CD, and a play.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”The House at the End of the World” (a thriller) by Dean Koontz; -”The Backup Plan” (a novel) by Jill Shalvis; -”The MitfordAffair” (historical fiction) by Marie Benedict.

That last book, “The Mitford Affair,” follows six sisters who dominated the English political, literary, and social scenes between the World Wars. Their family falls into chaos, though, when Diana divorces her wealthy husband and marries a Fascist leader while sister Unity is rumored to be Hitler’s mistress. Nancy, a novelist, becomes alarmed at her sisters’ interactions with Fascists and must make difficult choices between personal and political issues as she tries to stop the Nazis from taking over Great Britain.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
