“Ants in My Plants” was the title of the children’s picture book presented to Dimmitt Book Club when they met recently in the meeting room here at Rhoads Memorial Library. Guest speaker Rhonda “Rhonni” Pletcher wrote the 24-page book, which was beautifully illustrated by Chris Johnson, and explained her creative process to the group.

Written in rhyme, the book contains a repeating pattern that is helpful to early readers or English language learners. At the end of the story, an “Interview with an Ant” provides facts about ants and plants.

Pletcher, a former elementary school teacher, is also a musician, singer, and songwriter. “Once Upon a Crime” is a play set in a radio interview format which she has written. It is available on CD and has been performed before a live audience. Now residing near Amarillo, she once lived elsewhere in Texas as well as Nevada, Idaho, Kansas, Washington, and California.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”Encore in Death” (an Eve Dallas novel) by J.D. Robb; -”Unnatural History” (an Alex Delaware novel) by Jonathan Kellerman; -”The Cabinet of Dr. Leng” (Agent Pendergast series) by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child; -”Hard to Break” (Michael Gannon series) by Michael Ledwidge; -”Code Name Sapphire” (a World War II novel) by Pam Jenoff.

That last book, “Code Name Sapphire” is set in 1942 and is based on a true story, where Hannah Martel narrowly escaped Nazi Germany after her fiancé was killed. When her ship bound for America is turned away at port, she has nowhere to go but to Brussels, where her cousin Lily lives with her family.

Hannah joins the Sapphire Line, a secret resistance network designed to help people escape Nazioccupied Europe. When a terrible mistake causes Lily’s family to be arrested and slated for deportation to Auschwitz, Hannah is confronted with the question: How much will she sacrifice to save the people she loves?
