“I Love Strawberries!” by Shannon Anderson is the book that will be featured during a reading here at Rhoads Memorial Library on Thursday, July 27, at 4 p.m. Todd Thompson, field representative with Texas Farm Bureau, is travelling around the Texas Panhandle with the mission of acquainting children with the importance of agriculture. Farm Bureau of Castro County is co-sponsoring the event. Thompson plans to read the book aloud to young attendees and will offer treats that contain strawberries. There may even be a craft to create. The event, to be held in our meeting room, is free and open to the public.

The following day will feature the end of our 2023 Summer Reading Program for youngsters. It followed the theme of “All Together Now!” which focused on kindness, tolerance, and understanding. Before that, however, the final Terrific Tuesday is slated for July 25, at 4 p.m. here. It is led by Felice Acker, Castro County agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

For adults, newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”The Happiness Plan’ (a novel) by Susan Mallery; -”The Last Sinner” (a thriller) by Lisa Jackson; -”Palazzo” (a novel) by Danielle Steele; -”The Sound of Sleighbells” (Christmas Tree Ranch series) by Janet Dailey; and -”Welcome to Beach Town” (a novel) by Susan Wiggs.

We are hearing “good buzz” for two books that were released at the end of last year. Ready to check out are: -”You Are My Sunshine: A Story of Love, Promises, and a Really Long Bike Ride” by Sean Dietrich, an author who features eccentricities of the American South. The book is based on the author’s true story that evolves when his wife gets scary news and decides they need to go on a big adventure.

She makes him promise to go on a bike ride spanning the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Towpath Trail. Sean, who was never an athlete of any kind, agrees and shares their hilarious, touching, and sometimes terrifying story of the long bike ride. This book “reminds you of what is most important in life, the value of keeping your promises, and the importance of connection in your most treasured relationships.”

-”Firestorm” by Texas author Taylor Moore, is a thriller set in the Texas High Plains and it features DEA Special Agent Garrett Kohl. He has returned to his Texas Panhandle home only to discover that Talon Corporation, a powerful energy consortium, has begun an aggressive mining operation that could destroy his land and his family’s way of life.

Kohl goes on the offensive and learns Talon has murky, sinister global connections and is trying to commandeer precious U.S. resources. When Kohl’s friend, CIA operative Kim Manning is kidnapped by ruthless mercenaries related to this case, he must do whatever it takes to rescue her--and get rid of Talon once and for all.

Patrons may recognize Taylor Moore’s character, Garrett Kohl, from Moore’s first book, “Down Range.” That book featured various places throughout the Texas Panhandle; book number two, “Firestorm” does, too.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
