“Paradise on the Plains” is the theme of the upcoming Castro County Harvest Days, slated for August 25-26, at the Courthouse Square. We have some of the Fair books here at Rhoads Memorial Library that provide details of the event as well as rules and guidelines for Fair entries. You may pick one up from our circulation desk.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”The Bone Hacker” (Temperance Brennan series) by Kathy Reichs; -”Out of Nowhere” (a novel) by Sandra Brown; -”The Paris Assignment” (a novel) by Rhys Bowen.

In a change of pace from the mainstream genres of books we offer our readers, we have acquired two fantasy/ sci-fi series that have been adapted to the small screen and shown on Netflix. The trilogy of “Shadow and Bone” by Leigh Bardugo follows Alina Starkov while she “discovers her dormant powers and is swept up in a world of luxury and illusion. As she struggles to fit into her new life, a threat to the kingdom of Ravka grows: one that will test old alliances and challenge the very limits of magic, one that will forge a leader from a frightened girl.”

“Witcher” by Andrzej Sapkowski is another bestselling multi-volume series depicted on Netflix. Geralt of Rivia, known as the Witcher, and his allies, who include the powerful sorceress Yennefer, must find a way to protect Ciri, a child prophesied to have the power to change the world for good or for evil.

That power could come in handy as the century-old, uneasy peace between humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves is shattered and war is looming.

But if the genre of fantasy/ sci-fi is not for you, we do have some more traditional fiction that has been donated to us and is ready for checkout, including: -”Nantucket Nights” (a novel) by Elin Hilderbrand. It follows the trio of best friends Kayla, Antoinette and Val, who annually gather to drink champagne, swap stories, and swim naked under the Nantucket stars. It is a ritual they have enjoyed for 20 years. But this time, one of them swims out from the shore and doesn’t return.

After the surviving friends emerge from their grief, they realize that the repercussions of their loss go far beyond their little circle. What once made their friendship strong now has the power to destroy their marriages, families, and even themselves as secrets are revealed.

-”Nobody’s Sweetheart Now” (a mystery) by Maggie Robinson, is a 2018 release of a new historical cozy series set in 1924 featuring Lady Adelaide. Her deceased husband, Rupert, returns as a ghost, tasked with performing a few good deeds before he is welcomed into Heaven (or more likely to Hell, Lady Adelaide surmises).

Kirkus Reviews found the story to be “a lively debut filled with local color, red herrings, both sprightly and spritely characters, a smidgen of social commentary, and a climactic surprise.”

Until next week, Happy Reading!
