While the year 2023 has not yet come to a close, 2024 is fast approaching and will be here soon.

That is why here at Rhoads Memorial Library we are sprucing up our exercise DVD’s section and the weight loss books for patrons interested in pursuing such matters via New Year’s resolutions.

Additionally, we offer several magazines who promote health tips along with diet and exercise information.

As always, these may be checked out for a twoweek period or feel free to stop by and peruse them here.

If you are like me and eschew making New Year’s resolutions, however, you may opt for a form of escapism as the holidays wind down.

We offer several newly released books that are ready for checkout, including: -”Welcome Home, Stranger” (a novel) by Kate Christensen. The story follows Rachel, a middleaged environmental journalist in Washington, DC, who has grown apart from her family. She returns home to Maine, reluctantly, after the death of her difficult mother. Divorced and childless, Rachel must come to terms with her past as she attempts to reconnect with family and friends.

-”The Mayors of New York” (a crime novel) by S.J. Rozan. Private investigators Lydia Chin and Bill Smith are hired to find the missing son of New York’s new female mayor. With time ticking until the press learns of his disappearance, the duo must track him down while determining whether a teen found dead and another hit by gunfire is connected to the case. The PIs realize that the only help they might get is from the real “mayors” of New York: the neighborhood leaders.

-”City of Betrayal” (a novel) by Victoria Thompson. Former grifter Elizabeth Bates, whom readers may remember from such works as “City of Shadows” where she outed an unscrupulous medium, has given up her illegal activities-- for the most part.

Now working with suffragists to ensure women receive the right to vote via ratification of the 19th amendment, Elizabeth is shocked to learn that many powerful men will do anything to quash the effort. She must devise the perfect con or the suffragists’ work will be for naught.

Concerning the New Year’s holiday, remember we will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 30, since Castro County’s observance of the holiday is on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024. Since Monday is our normal day off, that is why we are taking our holiday on Saturday.

We wish for you and yours a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in 2024 when we reopen at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2!
