Library Lines ...

Just when you think the holidays are over and we can settle back into a routine...

We will be closed, here at Rhoads Memorial Library, on Saturday, Jan. 13, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. We will re-open at our normal time of 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16. (And I haven’t even mentioned how we will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 17, for Presidents’ Day. But that’s a topic for a later “Library Lines.”) We have a few free 2024 calendars available at our circulation desk. Most of them are provided by our good friend, Felice Acker, local agent with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Some are in English, some in Spanish, and they contain tasty recipes in addition to their main function of informing you of the date.

Speaking of Felice: she has provided January’s Young Scientists’ take-and-make kits and we are distributing them now. They feature a “Winter Bird Feeder.”

I was most perplexed recently to find that we had no more years’ imprints remaining on our date stamps (or stampers). Used to stamp due dates in items checked out to our patrons, the stampers’ years spanned 2017 through 2023.

I was (and still am) puzzled by how I could have sent myself an alert years into the future to remember to buy new date stampers. Perhaps using the calendar or reminder function in my cell phone or email would work. Although I do not use those functions now, maybe I will start.

I did buy new stampers that will go through 2034. So, if electronic reminders fail me when 2035 arrives, I can face bewilderment again about how to prompt myself about an event 10 years away. As the late Gilda Radner said, “It’s always something.”

We are continuing to get ready for our annual book sale. Set to begin Tuesday, Jan. 23, it will offer a multitude of books, movies, and audiobooks. As always, paperbacks cost 25 cents while hardbacks are 75 cents. Here is the rare instance where Infl ation is not applicable since we have assessed these prices for years!

Hopefully we will receive 2023 federal income tax forms and instruction booklets at the end of this month. We will post a sign on our door when (if?) they are available.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
