“Becoming a creative cook means you will never lack admirers, since good food has a magic appeal. You may grow old, even ugly, but if you are a good cook, people will always find the path to your door.” That pearl of wisdom came from James A. Beard, the American chef who wrote several cookbooks, pioneered television cooking shows, taught cooking classes, and is generally credited with freeing the United States from its dependence on European forms of cooking.

His cookbook and many others can be found at our book sale here at Rhoads Memorial Library. Our sale started this week and offers an abundance of books and other surprises.

However, if cooking is not your thing, there are other items that may pique your interest. Bundled paperback mystery series, fitness DVDs, books for cat fanciers, and cowboy/wild west books are for sale. A multi-volume Time Life series of books examining various aspects of World War II can be yours for $15.

Large print books, fiction, non-fiction, arts and crafts, do-it-yourself books can be found along with teachers’ workbooks, piano instruction books, and humorous books. Children’s books for all ages, music CDs, and audio books can be yours for a few cents.

This annual sale will continue through Jan. 31. It is best to follow the old axiom of “shop early for best selection.”
