Now Swim

In his heart, a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. Proverbs 16:9 I walked into the radio station seeking a part-time job. It was back in 1994 shortly after I completed my 3-year Bible course. I was prepared to do anything just to bring in an income. When I arrived, I was immediately ushered into a recording studio and handed a piece of paper. “When the light turns red,” said my host, “read this.” I read the short script as they instructed not knowing that they had recorded me.

When I immerged from the studio the controller said, “He’s a natural.” I was promptly offered a position as a radio announcer. I didn’t go to the station to apply to become an announce but God, in his wisdom and foreknowledge, dropped me into the deep end. The rest is history. Today, by the grace of God, my radio shows are aired in over 100 countries.

God has a habit of dropping us into the deep end. In the Bible, we see a similar account where Jesus says to two humble fishermen, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Peter and Andrew had no experience in leading men. They were dropped into the deep end, so to speak. Peter immerged as the founding member of the Church of Jesus Christ.

I have discovered that tracking God’s will is not very diffi cult. Granted, God does sometimes present us with options that require us to make a calculated choice (and I think we know clearly when he does this) but more often than not he simply presents his awe-inspiring plans to us and says, “There you go. I know the plans I have for you… now swim!”

Let me add if you continue to acknowledge the Lord in all your ways; if you walk by faith and not by sight and if you keep your eyes stayed on Jesus the author and perfecter of your faith, then your Lord will direct your paths according to his plans. Don’t be surprised the next time you find yourself treading water. Just remember he is with you even in the deep end.
