Sheriff Sal Rivera gave his monthly report for June at Castro County Commissioners Court on July 12.

Sheriff’s Deputies activity report for June included 93 calls, 31 citations, 26 warnings, seven arrests with three traffic stop arrests, two criminal citations, four warrants, 28 reports and two transports.

Drug seizures during June included 306.9 grams of marijuana, 0.4 grams of methamphetamine, 449.9 grams of synthetic substances and 1.2 grams of heroin.

Drug seizures for the first half of 2021 are 502.8 grams of marijuana, 59.7 grams of methamphetamine, 454.9 grams of synthetic substances, 0.3 grams of cocaine 44 dose units of dangerous drugs, 1.2 grams of heroin and two PDP arrests. Most people arrested in drug cases were also filed on for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Rivera said June calls for other local agencies in the county included Dimmitt Police Department, 79 calls; Texas DPS, 3; Fire Departments, 5; EMS, 25 and miscellaneous, 11.

The Dimmitt Fire Department had four calls and Hart Fire Department had seven calls. Calls include page outs for fires, wrecks, medical calls, natural disasters, assistance in missing person searches and any other miscellaneous calls.

The first six months of calls for 2021 had totals of: Castro County SO, 403; Dimmitt PD, 535; Dimmitt Animals Control, 3; Texas DPS, 30; Fire Depts, 26; EMS, 146; miscellaneous, 28; and DISD PD, 1. Calls to date were 1,172 compared to 2020 at 2,578.

The Castro County Jail had an average of 26 onsite inmates from June 1 to June 30, with the highest numbers the last week of the month at 31 inmates. There were eight females and 26 males in the jail throughout the month. There was one male being held on an immigration detainer.

Rivera said general maintenance at the jail and Castro County Law Enforcement facility continues with changing AC/Heat filters every 30 days. Mario’s Heating & Air repaired AC unit #3 by replacing the coil. Allen’s Tri-State replaced a leaking filter on dishwasher.

An Out of County Inmate Housing contract was sent to Swisher County Judge Harold Keeter. It was on the agenda for the Swisher County Commissioner’s Court for the June 26 meeting.

Out of County Inmate Housing in June included Floyd County inmates (122 days) and Lamb County inmates, (63 days) for total revenue of $9,250.

Sheriff Rivera also presented the Motor Vehicle Racial Profiling information to the commissioners.

There were 60 traffic stops, with nine on city streets 29 on US highways and 22 on state highways. Ethnicity was not known prior to any stop, with the majority being Hispanic/Latino (38) and white (20). There were 22 females and 38 males involved in the stops.

Most of the stops were moving traffic violations and there were six searches conducted, three with consent. Contraband was discovered in all six searches (alcohol or drugs). Results of stop: one verbal warning’ 25 written warnings; 31 citations and three citations with arrest based on penal code. No physical force was used during stops. No complaints were filed.
