This is what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord is his name: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

Jeremiah 33:2-3 niv

We often leave discovering the unsearchable mysteries of God to the university professor or to those secluded in the monastery or convent. Ironically, Jeremiah hears this word from God while he is in prison! What an encouraging word for us to know that God desires to relate the inner workings of creation even to those with uncertain futures and questionable circumstances.

When I take this verse to heart and really begin to contemplate the depths of God and the mysteries of life I get very nervous. Continuing my education in theology has required me to do this in an intentional way. When I begin to push past the comfortable knowledge I have of God and pray to know God on a deeper level it feels as if I am in the middle of the ocean with nothing keeping me afloat, nothing to hold onto. This is a scary feeling. I sense myself grasping for some foundation.

During these times, God answers my grasping by reminding of his deep love for me. Through experiences in my life, I remember how God has offered mercy and strength. Through scripture, I recall those words that have carried me through and offered hope. Through family and friends, I reminisce on those moments shared with others who reveal God’s love in their love for me.

When we ask God to show us new and unimaginable things we must be willing to risk our old certainties. By allowing God to draw us more unto himself, we begin to grasp, just a little more, how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.
