WTAMU Meat Judging Team, with Nazareth’s Ryan Heitschmidt a member, went fourth at the National Wester Meat Judging competition in Denver. The Nazareth Horse Judging Team did well at the Fort Worth Stock Show competition. The team won seventh overall with a fifth in halter, 10th in performance and seventh in reasons. Team members include Will Young, Tell Bagley (5th in halter), Kamre Mask (21st overall, 19th in halter), and Charly Mask (17th in halter). In other judging contests, the Naz Livestock Judging Team went seventh overall with team members Tanner Wethington (10th), Brett Heitschmidt (17th), The Dairy Cattle Judging Team went 26th overall.

Body

The WTAMU Meat Judging Team went fourth overall at the National Western Meat Judging Competition, earning a first in reasons by five points, first in pork by 26 points, and second in specs.

Nazareth Ryan Heitschmidt, a member of the WTAMU team, went fifth in pork judging.

Other members of the team placing were Eli Mathis, third individual overall, with a first in specs with the only perfect 100, and fourth in pork; Colt Edrington, nineth individual overall, and third in lamb; Mikayla Hudnall, first in pork judging and third in reasons; Megan Miller, third alternate; and Madison Colvin, seventh alternate Other team members include Bryce Hutson, Caleb Olfers, Parker Franz, Juan-Carlos Buentello, Noah Harrell, Payton Ownbey and Katelynn Welsh. The meat judging teams is coached by Megan Eckhardt, Will Boyd and Dr. Loni Lucherk.

The Meat Judging Team is a competitive event for students interested in the meat industry. Students on the team can be from any undergraduate major and are usually sophomores and juniors.

Students evaluate beef, pork and lamb carcasses and wholesale cuts at many of the nation’s largest meat processing facilities, providing them an in-depth look at the meat industry while preparing them for a future career in the industry.
