Next week will feature some events happening here at Rhoads Memorial Library. First up is the start of Terrific Tuesdays on June 13. The eagerly anticipated children’s event will begin at 4 p.m. with Felice Acker, local agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, welcoming youngsters into our meeting room. She will read a story and provide a craft.

The Olen Schulte Memorial Team Roping & Wild West Show drew a crowd and plenty of competitors this past weekend despite some soggy challenges; fulfilling its purpose of helping preserve the cowboy heritage and fund scholarships for area youth – plus a lot of rough and tumble fun.

Abbott signs safety bills

Governor Greg Abbott signed eight critical pieces of public safety legislation passed during the 88th Regular Legislative Session into law on Tuesday. The bills are intended to help ensure communities across Texas have the resources needed to support law enforcement personnel, enhance criminal penalties for growing classes of crimes, and hold district attorneys accountable, among other measures.

State sales tax 3.8B in May

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reported that state sales tax revenue totaled $3.84 billion in May, 4.1 percent more than in May 2022. The majority of May sales tax revenue is based on sales made in April and remitted to the agency in May.

Top 10 Most Wanted fugitives captured

Three of Texas’ 10 Most Wanted are back in custody following their arrests last month in Lubbock, Dallas and Killeen. David Thomas was arrested May 17; Nehemiah Hicks was arrested May 22; and Kentrell Fletcher was arrested May 25.

Abbott appoints Scott as interim AG

Governor Greg Abbott last Wednesday appointed John Scott as the short-term attorney general of Texas, under Article 15, Section 5 of the Texas Constitution. The appointment comes following the impeachment of Ken Paxton by the Texas House of Representatives over allegations of misconduct and crimes.

“All Together Now” is the theme of our 2023 summer reading program for youngsters, which has begun and will run through July 28. Here at Rhoads Memorial Library, we are still registering Castro County youth through age 17, for this annual event. Plenty of prizes will be awarded as children complete reading goals, Terrific Tuesdays will be held beginning June 13, and we hope a fun time will be had by all!
