Xcel faces lawsuits relating to wildfires

Xcel Energy released a statement last Thursday acknowledging that its facilities may have played a part in igniting the massive Smokehouse Creek wildfire, which is now the largest the Texas history. The budget, while complying with spending caps that House Republicans pushed in last year’s Fiscal Responsibility Act in exchange for raising the debt limit, has little hope of passing, with House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington delivering a “Fiscal State of the Nation” speech on the floor of the U.S.

Sheriff presents report to commissioners

Sheriff Sal Rivera presented his monthly report to the Castro County Commissioners Court, updating them on county law enforcement calls, the jail report and fire departments. Total calls for service in January included the Castro County Sheriff’s Office with 62; Dimmitt Police Department, 35: Texas DPS, three; fire departments, five; and Emergency Medical Service, 31.

King appointed to committee on wildfires

On Tuesday, Texas Speaker Dade Phelan announced the creation of an Investigative Committee on the Panhandle Wildfires. Representative Ken King, from Canadian, will serve as the chair of this committee which will include Representatives Burrows and Hunter, as well as community members Jason Abraham and Ashley Cash.
