Well, the governor’s office and Texas politicians are cheering for the so-called “Constitutional Carry” bill that should be signed soon and put into law.

My opinion is that it has so many restrictions and lacks real “teeth and spine.”

Take for instance the fact that it can’t stop the federal government from running rampage – like the ATF – should they come up with a reason to descend on a citizen. The state law enforcement is directed to NOT assist, leaving citizens at the mercy of a bunch of federal nuts (in many cases). Sounds more like a license for the federal government to do what it wants without anyone stepping in.

The list of prohibited places where permitless carry is rather long. Interestingly enough, schools have been the target of many active shooter incidents (you know, the NO GUN ZONES), and just maybe teachers need to be carrying. It could save lives in many cases, though many school boards have designated specifically trained individuals to have access to weapons.

I like the permitless carry part. But law abiding citizens never really needed permits or background checks. And criminals aren’t going to get a permit no matter what the law requires. The whole permit thing was punishing Texans who wanted to defend themselves against these very criminals.

We will see how it works out. But let’s not call it Constitutional Carry – it isn’t with all the restrictions attached.
