There are some interesting “doings” in and around Rhoads Memorial Library now that we are progressing through the month of May. The month’s displayers are Carolyn and Don Moke, who are exhibiting some of their handiwork.

Carolyn’s embroidery skills are evident on items ranging from cup towel sets to pillowcases as subjects range from cowboys to bees to frogs as well as seasonal topics. Don shows off the money folds he has made out of leather and ostrich skin.

Young Scientists’ takeand- make kits for May feature “Library Critters” and are going fast. (Interesting observation: April’s kits featured Rain Sticks and it started raining around here... coincidence?) Creator of the popular kits for youngsters is Felice Acker, local agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.

Speaking of Mrs. Acker, she has graciously agreed, once again, to be in charge of Terrific Tuesdays, the popular event that coincides with our Summer Reading Program. Our annual reading program for youngsters will be held from June 1 through July 28, with registration set for May 30-31 here at the library.

Castro County schools will be out next week for the summer. The last day for Dimmitt and Nazareth is May 18, while Hart’s last day is May 19. We have encountered some parents who are less than thrilled with this turn of events while some school personnel giddily tell us that it is our turn to host the youngsters. We are ready to have fun!

Until next week, Happy Reading!
