Ruminants like cattle, sheep, and goats have a unique digestive system that allows them to gain energy from forage such as mature pasture grass and hay. The carbohydrates found in these feeds help to provide ruminants with healthy energy, but did you know that consuming high amounts of certain other types of carbohydrates can be dangerous—and even deadly?

'Noooooo!' I exclaimed upon witnessing a potential defacing of one of our books recently. Two youngsters accompanied their mother into the juvenile section here at Rhoads Memorial Library when I noticed they had candy with them. I told the mother that food and beverages are not allowed, so she instructed the youngsters to put the wrapped candy in their pockets.

Sometimes I wonder how our ancient ancestors survived without foods like breakfast cereal and ice cream. But maybe they didn’t realize what they were missing, because pre-historic television commercials got such poor reception.

Fear and greed tend to expand the size of government, as well as creating “a crisis.” Conjuring illusionary crises and promoting fear as a pretext for more government power is nothing new. Government officials who “rule” us (and forget they are public servants who are basically our employees) understand the basic facts of fear and exploit and cultivate it.

Every day in my high school homeroom smelled different. Not better, but different.

The concept of patriotism is recognized as love or devotion to one’s country. I believe patriotism is cultivated from a love embodied in a family and community that underpins love for one’s country. This cascade of patriotism leads to compatriotism, identifying with a group of others.

Often, taxing entities fail to act in good faith by shutting down transparency that might hold them accountable for their decisions. “Transparency” is government’s obligation to share information with citizens that is needed to make informed decisions and hold officials accountable for the conduct of the people’s business.
