For those who cling to the U3 unemployment charts, it might look as if some things have really improved. But it isn’t a complete picture. I stick to the U6 report – considered to be the actual unemployment rate because it more inclusive. The current U6 unemployment rate as of May 2021 is 10.

The State Fair of Texas, it will be returning in 2021 after a disappointing shut down in 2020 and causing numerous Castro County exhibitors to cancel trips. Despite the shutdown, students across the state still received Big Tex Scholarships for $6,000, including Kari Schulte of Nazareth High School.

Cemetery board holds meeting, work day

Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery held its annual meeting on Monday, May 31, at the cemetery. Work started at 8 AM. American flags were placed on 170 veterans’ graves . About 20 volunteers picked up old flowers, glass containers, trash and solar lights.

Gas prices continue to rise across state

GasBuddy has reported that over the last week, Amarillo gas prices have risen 11 cents and brought the average price to $2.64/gallon as of June 7. The higher gas prices in Dimmitt are averaging $2.89/regular; $3.28/Midgrade; $3.54/Premium; and $2.99/diesel.

Castro County Sheriff’s Department answered a 911 call for a report of a major traffic accident at 385S and FM 145 this past week. A pickup pulling a trailer collided with car at the intersection, with considerable damage to the car. No details on the cars or drivers were available.

Caution urged as snakes come out for summer

As summer sets in and temperatures rise, so do the odds of snakes coming out. While snakes serve valuable functions to their habitats, it’s important to know what to look out for – for their safety and the humans around them.
