Community Water Conference set for Feb. 24-25 in Hereford

For more than a century, human communities on the Southern Plains have lived by extracting large amounts of water from local landscapes, particularly through high intensity irrigation. The paradigm, long proven baseless, that the supply of underground water is limitless dies hard.

Deaf Smith County’s Chamber of Commerce held its annual banquet Saturday night at Hilltop Event Center. Top honorees included B.J. Gililland (Citizen of the Year), Brenda Fuentes (Hall of Fame) and Vanessa Nava (Employee of the Year).

May school, city elections open for filing

It’s something less than a stampede of filings so far in the City Officers Election upcoming May 2.Incumbent Place 6 at-large Commissioner Deven Black is the only candidate to have filed as of January 28, according to City Secretary Franchesca Jimenez.

Declining number of hunters a real concern for wildlife agencies

As the 2025-2026 waterfowl and crane season concludes, it’s hard to imagine, given the fierce competition for choice waterfowl and sandhill crane hunting hotspots in this region, that there is real concern over the declining number of hunters, including waterfowl hunters, in the United States.

Southwest Cotton Physiology Conference set Feb. 10-12 in Lubbock

The Southwest Cotton Physiology Conference will be held Feb. 10-12 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Lubbock, 1102 E. Farm-to-Market Road 1294. The event is hosted by Texas A&M AgriLife, Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University.The program will begin at 1 p.m.

Central Church of Christ

The Central Church of Christ meets every Sunday at 148 Sunset, the corner of Sunset & Plains, in Hereford. Sunday School begins at 9:30 a.m.; Morning worship begins at 10:30 a.m.; and the Sunday evening worship begins at 6:00 p.m. We also meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m.
