Starlight on indigo is a pre-dawn waterfowling spectacle

Duck and goose hunting is of common practical necessity a pursuit involving early morning rituals. Rising long before the sun makes its appearance in the east, driving to the lake or field by headlights, and setting decoys in what seems, at first, pitch darkness, are all requisite.

PRESSURE BEARS WATCHING--Sandhill cranes are a familiar feature of fall and winter days in the Panhandle and South Plains, their trilling bugling equated by the great naturalist Alldo Leopold to 'the trumpet call of evolution.' A challenging but rewarding bird to hunt over decoys, their harvest is being watched closely by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Hunting pressure on sandhill cranes bears watchfulness

Years ago, very few people hunted sandhill cranes in the Panhandle and South Plains. That has changed dramatically in the last 10-15 years as the sportiness of hunting them over decoys and their culinary quality has been recognized.

West Plains tops Herd in season finale

The Hereford Whitefaces finished up district play by welcoming the West Plains Wolves to Whiteface Field last Friday night. West Plains is the #2-ranked team in the state in 4A, and they finished district play undefeated by topping Hereford 45-7.
