By Gaye Reily “A good time was had by all” can be said about Natalie (Cline) Bright’s visit to Dimmitt Book Club’s meeting recently. The Dimmitt native, a successful author of 20 books ranging from Old West cookbooks to contemporary Christian fiction along with some children’s books, spoke to attendees when they convened in the meeting room here at Rhoads Memorial Library.

Bright brought her newly released book, “End of the Trail Eats: Cowboy-Approved Recipes from the Cowtown Cafe to the Saloon.” She noted that, in addition to featuring recipes from cafes, stockyards, saloons, and brothels, she also included “archival photographs, history, Cowtown remedies, andfirsthand accounts” of cattle drovers who followed Texas Longhorns up the trail to Kansas in the 1800s.

Additionally, Bright answered the group’s questions about the effect of the recent wildfires in the Texas Panhandle on her family’s cow/calf operation near Fritch. (She and her husband, Chris, along with their two sons, raise all-natural, grass-fed Angus beef. ) Bright reported that part of their 30,000-acre ranch was torched by the Windy Deuce fire and several head of cattle perished. She told of the harrowing escape by the ranch foreman (one of her sons) as he had to navigate through flames on both sides, driving into smoke-induced non-visibility.

She noted that she posted on social media about the many kindnesses shown to them and others. Bright was surprised when people from all over the world responded with, “What? You mean people really help each other there?” She replied that, yes, people in this area and beyond look out for one another like they always have.
