Castro County first responders answered a call to a two-vehicle accident that resulted in the death of one driver last Thursday.
The crash occurred 8.7 miles north of Dimmitt on US 385 about 1:45 p.m., resulting in the death of Russell Smallwood, 61 of Lubbock, Texas. He was pronounced deceased on the scene by Castro County Justice of the Peace Mary Ewing. The other driver was uninjured.
Tranquilino Garza, 45, of Hereford, Texas, who was driving a 2016 Ford F450 pickup truck was towing a trailer, whileSmallwood’s2021 GMC Sierra pickup truck, also towing a trailer,was driving southbound and traveled into the northbound land, side-swiping the other vehicle.
Garza’s vehicle finally stopped in a jack-knifed position in the northbound lane; Smallwood’s vehicle and trailer came to rest in the ditch west of the roadway.
Responders to the scene of the accident was the Castro County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS officers, Castro County EMS and Dimmitt VFD.
The accident is being investigated by the Texas DPS.
