Tomorrow’s Water exploring playas as vital water source
CLEAR DRAINAGE--With a good grassland buffer in place, playas like this one surrounded by native grasses receive 'polished' water vital for recharging the Ogallala aquifer.
In recent years the Texas Playa Conservation Initiative, partnering with the Playa Lakes Joint Venture, Ogallala Commons on the local level, and other playa and water conservation-oriented entities have been championing playas not only as an all-important source of wildlife habitat, but as a vital contributor to at least localized recharge of the diminishing Ogalla aquifer.
