HEREFORD KIDS--William Eugene “Bub” Sparks, shown here with his late sisters Virgie and Alyce, will achieve his 100th birthday on May 4. He will be honored with a reception in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist church at noon on May 3. Sparks is the oldest and longest time member—90 years—of the FBC congregation, where he still attends services every Sunday.
NAVY DAYS--Bub Sparks in Navy uniform dating to 1944 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 18. His time at sea included stops at 'exotic places' like Iwo Jima and Okinawa in desperate closing battles of World War II. Despite sailing the vast Pacific, he says he never learned to swim. Sparks is the oldest living veteran of World War II locally.
