Lowell “L.D.” Neumayer of Ruidoso, New Mexico, passed away at his home on Nov. 24, 2024.
L.D. was born in Dimmitt, Texas. He graduated from Dimmitt High School where he built his first horse trailer in his high school welding shop class and pulled it to youth rodeos around the Texas panhandle roping calves. He attended Sul Ross where he met and married his wife Judy (Dodson) Neumayer. They settled in Hereford, Texas and raised their two sons Rodney Cy Neumayer and Bowie Winn Neumayer , along with corn, cattle, and his passion American Quarter Horses.
In the late 80’s they moved to Ruidoso, NM and he was the General Manager of the Ruidoso Horse Sale Company. For 35 years he traveled thousands of miles evaluating the best yearling racing prospects in North America. He loved nothing more than visiting the ranches as well as his longtime friends across the country. He had a keen eye and spotted many future world champions as babies and narrowly missed out on the winning bids on a lot of them, or at least that was the story he told in the Turf Club.
He loved naming horses, a good story, and a great joke. Over the years he had some good runners, some not so much, bred a few Champions and one of the great producing quarter horse broodmare lines. He was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2018. He would have loved one more call to see “what’s goin on,” one more day with his racing buddies at the track, and one more time in his hat and boots.
LD is survived by his children, Rodney Neumayer (Cindy) and Bowie Neumayer (Sheri); grandchildren, Jordan Neumayer, Ashlynn Neumayer, and AbbieWinn Neumayer; sister Nancy Coyte; special friend Holly King; and his former wife Judy Neumayer. He ispreceded in death by sister Sandra Bagwell.
He loved to rope and ride, didn’t care much for a 6 shooter, but enjoyed a good western or rodeo. He loved sports, his friends and family, he was a cowboy. His generous spirit will be missed.
A family service will be held.
