Gunn
Hershel “Leon” Gunn, 84 of Dimmitt, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, in Dimmitt. Leon’s Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be on Monday, Feb. 24, 2025, at the Fourth and Bedford Church of Christ in Dimmitt with Minister King Burney officiating. Services have been entrusted to Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt, Texas.
Leon was born on May 25, 1940, in Clovis, New Mexico to Robert and Flora (Parmer) Gunn. After High School Leon met Billie (Barnett) in Hereford while riding the “drag”, they married on July 14, 1961, in Vega, Texas. Leon worked 35 years for Dimmitt Redi Mix before owning and operating Leon Gunn Backhoe Service. In Leon’s younger years, he enjoyed hot rodding, riding motorcycles, playing on jet skis, and water skiing, all with Billie by his side. Leon loved being on the lake; boating, fishing, spending time with friends, and teaching and pulling others as they water ski. He also enjoyed a good fish fry with friends, and going pheasant, deer, and quail hunting. Leon and Billie enjoyed their time together at Waurika Lake, Ute Lake, and traveling all over the United States in their motorhome. Leon enjoyed life and would often say, “Life is just a party waiting to happen.”
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 63 years, Billie Gunn of Dimmitt; sister, Roxann Gunn Pollard of Granbury, Texas; sisters-in-law, Nelda Rogers of Amarillo, Texas, and Doris Smith and her husband Gene of Abilene, Texas; many nieces and nephews; special friends, the Don Robb Family; and his loved poodle,Sassie.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Flora Gunn; sister, Betty Odell and her husband Frank; and brother-in-law, Jack Rogers.
