Edgar “Ed” Alton Hartley 1933-2026

Edgar “Ed” Alton Hartley, of Hereford, Texas, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026, in Hereford, at the age of 93.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Hereford, with Pastor Nathan Adams officiating. Family will accept friends for visitation and viewing on Thursday, April 16, 2026, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Arrangements and Cremation Services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford.

Edgar was born on March 8, 1933, in Adkins, Texas to William and Rosie (Bell) Hartley. Ed married Bonnie Singer on June 1, 1952, they moved to Hereford in 1969. Ed spent most of his life farming before working at Deaf Smith Electric Coop for twenty-five years.

He was an active participant in the First Baptist Church of Hereford, the Mason and Eastern Star Organization, and the Hereford Lions Club, as well as a member of the Walcott school board. Ed pursued interests such as hunting, fishing, traveling, bowling, and snow skiing. He and Bonnie took lessons and began snow skiing in their sixties, with Ed enjoying the sport until the age of 86. Ed’s favorite daily routine was drinking coffee with his beloved friends at McDonalds. He also loved traveling to Rockport, Texas every spring to eat raw oysters at the Rockport Oyster Festival. Ed cherished moments with his family, particularly with his grandchildren, and loved sharing his favorite late-night treat—peanut butter and syrup—at 10:00 before watching the news and heading to bed.

Ed was blessed to find companionship and love again after the passing of his wife Bonnie in 2010. Ed married Cynthia McMinn Streun on June 13, 2015. Together they enjoyed being with family and traveling in their RV. They travelled to many places including Colorado, Arizona, and to Rockport, Texas each spring to the Oyster Festival on the Coast.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, William and Rosie Hartley, wife Bonnie (Singer) Hartley; brothers, Leonard Hartley, Charles Hartley, and Kermitt Hartley; and sisters, Leona Hartley Jameson and Maryann Hartley Ebeling.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia Hartley of Hereford, Texas; children, Belinda Kirby Caperton (Doug) of Dimmitt, Texas, Alton Hartley (Chris) of Hereford, Texas, and Colette Lermon (Fred) of Wildorado, Texas; stepdaughters, Angela Poole (Danny) of Texline, Texas, Gina Wrigley (Alex) of Amarillo, Texas, and Cindy Fulton (Toby) of Nara Visa, New Mexico; grandchildren, Ronald Kirby (Sandi), Dennis Kirby (Denise), Asia Birkenfeld (Leroy), Tamber McKown (Doug Muir), Ky Kirby, Joshua Fuller (Stephanie), Jeremy Fuller, Grace Brewer (Garrett), Danni Poole, Cash Poole, Alexandra Wrigley, Montgomery Thompson, Sadie Streun Friemel (Jerry Alvarez), Patrick Friemel (Gaya), Connor Friemel (Katie), Jaclyn Stamp, and Cole Swart; twenty-six great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Ed to First Baptist Church of Hereford, the Hereford Lions Club, or consider planting a tree in his memory.
