Mike “Strawberry” Wilson, 76, a lifelong resident of Hereford, Texas, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2026, in Amarillo. Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the VFW in Hereford at 10:00 AM. Arrangements and cremation services have been entrusted to Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home of Hereford, Texas.
Mike was born on August 19, 1949, in Hereford, Texas, to Vernon Roy and Doris (Roberts) Wilson. After graduating from Hereford High School, he was drafted into the United States Army. After boot camp, Mike was sent to Fort Knox for specialized training. When he came home on leave before heading to Vietnam he could shoot a penny out of the air with a BB gun. During the Vietnam war the Army used BB guns for training. During his two years of service, Mike worked on tanks. Upon completing his military service, he returned to Hereford and began a career with Deaf Smith Electric, retiring after 36 years as a lineman.
Mike had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He enjoyed hunting for arrowheads, working with leather, fishing, making knives, and collecting coins. Known for his resourcefulness, he could build or repair almost anything. Mike cherished the camaraderie he found among his VFW friends. He also had a special love for chess, playing exclusively with his son, Jeston, whom he taught to play at a young age. Even in his final days, Mike’s meticulous nature was evident in his dedication to keeping his hair just right.
Mike’s greatest joy was his family. He shared a close bond with his children. Mike’s presence, smile, and attention to detail will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Jeston Wilson and his spouse Lori of Hereford, and Angela Wilson and her spouse Bobby of Benbrook; eight grandchildren, Rylie Wilson, Haylie Wilson, Peyton Sorensen, Caitlynn Sorensen, Morgan Lakey, Madyson Waldrip, Lybertee Snowden, and Koralyn Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Dawson, Lyric, Natalie, and Vaughn. He is also survived by his brother, Wesley Wilson, and his spouse Vickie of Midland.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Doris Wilson, as well as his brother Rodney Wilson and his spouse Shirley.
