John Allen Woodson, 78 of Dimmitt, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Kris Knippa officiating. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.

John Allen Woodson was born on Feb. 22, 1943, in Rotan, Texas to James F and Mary C Bailey. John graduated from Friona High School in 1961. After graduation he worked various jobs in the Friona area until he enlisted in the United States Navy serving from 1966 to 1970. He was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. He served aboard the USS Robert H. McCard. He served during the Vietnam era earning several service medals including the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Chien-Dich Boitinh Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. John was ranked E-5 Petty Officer Second Class when he was dis charged.

John loved music and was an avid reader of western books reading more than one a day at times.

John is survived by his children, Jeannie White of Lawton, Oklahoma, Sha Woodson of Sweetwater, Texas, Devon Herd of Dallas, Texas, Sheree Herd of Sweetwater; numerous grandchildren; one sister, Cathy Jackson and husband Cary of Dimmitt, Fred Bailey and wife Beverely of Friona, and Willie Bailey and wife Sally of Kemp, Texas.

John is preceded in death by his parents.
