The Dimmitt Bobbies Powerlifting team scored important wins at the THSWPA Region Championship meet held on March 2 at Colorado City, qualifying seven to compete at the state meet.

Coached by Rubio Romero, Bobbies punching their ticket to compete at the state meet are Na’Khiyah Porras (junior), Yahdira Esqueda (junior), Samara Smith (junior) and Jesimae Gamez (junior), Rosalinda Comparan (soph), Estreya Rubio (junior), and Shaylagh Henriquez (junior).

Bobbies’ lifters competed in two divisions – Equipped and Unequipped – and came through with the top regional team win in the Unequipped division and second place team in the Equipped division.

The DHS Bobbies Unequipped division team (1A-6A) won first place, followed by Midland Greenland, Water Valley, Clint, Version and Sunray in the top five teams. There were 57 lifters from 22 schools.

The Dimmitt Equipped division team placed second overall, with Ballinger taking first, and Alpine, Friona and Crane behind Dimmitt. There were 107 lifters competing from 11 schools in the division.

A new division this year, Unequipped lifting is defined as using only non-supportive singlets, T-shirts, briefs and socks while lifting. Lifters do not use any knee wraps, wrist wraps, or squat suits. The emphasis is on the athlete’s raw strength and technique to lift the weight with their own physical ability.

Equipped powerlifting refers to lifting with supportive gear, such as knee wraps, wrist wraps, and squat suits. The gear provides additional support and can help the lifter lift more weight than they could without it. The focus is not solely on the athlete’s raw strength, but also on the gear’s ability to assist in the lift. Equipped lifting requires a different technique than unequipped lifting.

The THSWPA state powerlifting meet will be held March 13- March 16 at the Comerica Center in Frisco, with 3A Equipped competing on March 14. The Unequipped division for all schools will also compete the same day.
