The 2020 General Election has come to an end with projected winners and losers and certifications coming up to finalize the results.

Nationally, Joe Biden, Democrat, was announced the projected winner in the contentious presidential race, garnering 290 electoral votes (270 was needed) to Republican incumbent Donald Trump’s 124, giving him a comfortable margin of victory at this point.

Some state are still counting, but as of Saturday, Biden was leading Trump by about 4 million votes nationwide. States with varying dates, should have results certified by early December.

"I am honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice President-elect Harris," Biden said in a written statement. "With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation. It’s time for America to unite. And to heal."

After being named President-elect, Biden made a speech Saturday, reached out the people who didn't vote for him.

"For all those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand the disappointment tonight," Biden said. "I've lost a couple of times myself. But now, let's give each other a chance."

Castro County voted for Trump with a total of 1,601 (76.90%), drawing 66 absentee ballots, 766 early voters and 787 votes at the general election. Biden had 466 votes (22.38%), 59 absentee, 210 early and 197 general election votes.

Winners of the United States Senator seat in the county was John Cornyn, with 1,571 votes (77.01%); and the United States Representative, Dist. 19 went to Jodey Arrington with 1,587 votes (78.92%). Ken King won in Castro County with 1,734 votes (100%). Cornyn and Arrington also won statewide.

Local candidates winning their elections – largely unopposed – were Shalyn Hamlin, County Attorney; Sal Rivera, Sheriff; Pamala Rickert, County Tax Assessor-Collector; Samuel Cava zos, County Constable; Paul Ramirez, County Commissioner, Pct. 1; and Michael Goolsby, County Commissioner, Pct. 3. All were Republicans.

In the Nazareth Mayor election, Marlin Durbin won with 88 votes, ahead of Dale Acker with 80 votes.

The city of Hart held a special referendum election for the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages for offpremise consumption. It passed with 123 votes for and 12 votes against.
