Candles in the Dark

As we face the winter months, many of us are preparing for a power outage. It is not something we look forward to, but where we live it is a reality. I have batteries in my flashlights, a new gas fireplace in my living room, and candles throughout the house. In fact I just stocked up on candles, so I am set.

My family and friends will tell you though that candles in my home are not an oddity, but a sure thing. I love waking up in the morning before the sun is up and lighting the candles in my home. It is something about the power of a small wick to displace the gloom that warms my heart. I think many of us have candles in our lives even if they are not classified as that by the world.

I know that having my kids or grandkids talk to Papa and Granny is a candle. When life circumstances have limited our ability to be together, seeing those sweet faces via internet or talking to them over the phone brings light to a dark place of isolation. I know that hearing a friend’s voice that is time zones away and talking about life as we catch up is a light for me.

I have learned that listening as others reflect on the memories of family members who are no longer here is a candle for many.

I believe the light of a candle is just as relevant as a spark of hope of remembrance we all need when the months are cold. We all need something to help us connect to the past, the here and now and even the future in a healthy way. Some means of lighting that wick called optimism that life can sometimes work at extinguishing.

As we approach the birth of the “Light of the World”, let us not forget the importance of a candle. Often candles are not even thought of until they are needed, but what if we made a point to keep one lit all year long. Maybe it does not have to be a physical candle, but a figurative one that keeps the darkness at bay: one that focuses on the belief that there is more to life then our time on Earth. I think we need to hold on to the resolute belief that what we do here matters as we try to keep darkness from taking over.

I can listen to the news and be overwhelmed or I can believe that the Light has a plan. I can sit in my home fearful of an illness, or I can do my best to protect myself as I rely on the Light to keep me in the palm of His hand. I can rant and rave on social media about my beliefs or I can live with dignity and allow the Light to direct my words and actions.

I think candles are a daily reminder that my Lord has this mess under control. Their light draws me in for the warmth and then allows me to walk away feeling better about what is occurring. You see I do not worry about a power outage, because I know the one that has all the power. The candles are just there to keep me from falling on my face as I walk around. Find your light source and then walk with confidence regardless of what the weather is outside.
