A Hereford resident died after colliding with a truck and semi-trailer this past Thursday morning.

Rachel Martinez, 39 of Hereford, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu traveling west on US 60 in the inside lane approximately 8 miles west of Hereford in Castro County. The driver of the 2020 Kenworth truck tractor, Adelita Medeles, 46 of Amarillo, was stopped in the left turning lane waiting for a train to clear the intersection of FM 1057.

According to the preliminary DPS report, Martinez failed to drive in a single lane and failed to control her speed, entering into the left turn lane, striking the back right of the semi-trailer. Upon impact, Martinez’s vehicle rotated counterclockwise and came to rest in the center of westbound US 60 facing north.

The truck and trailer were pushed forward and came to rest partially in the crossover and the left turn lane facing west.

Medeles suffered minor injuries and was transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene by Castro County Justice of the Peace Flip Taylor.

The crash remains under investigation.
