Library Lines ...

We are ascribing to the philosophy of "life is what happens while you're making other plans" here at Rhoads Memorial Library. The PLAN is that we will re-open tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. and resume regular hours.

That schedule would continue through Saturday morning, Tuesday and Wednesday; then we would observe Thanksgiving by being closed Thursday, Nov. 26 through Monday, Nov. 30. We would re-open for normal hours on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

If this plan reaches fruition in the current era of Coronavirus, it means we would welcome you back as we have new books to offer while taking care of your copying, faxing, scanning, and computer usage needs. Now let us see what really happens...

Amarillo Public Library and all of its branches had to close to the public, but they are offering curb service. Rapidly increasing numbers of COVID-19 caused the Swisher County Library in Tulia to close for a while, too.

If we must close again but have at least one healthy staff member, we could offer curb service, which we did while being shuttered in the spring. This means you could call us, and we could check out items you request and take them to you. Again, let's see what happens...

Thank-you to everyone who inquired about the health of my husband, Pat, as he seems to have recovered from his bout with COVID-19. I would say he had a mild case of it (although I'm not sure he would agree with that assessment!) and I feel incredibly surprised? blessed? lucky? that I did not contract it, too. It helped that he resided in our basement, mostly, while I remained above ground, repeatedly washing my hands and spraying or wiping everything with disinfectants. (With the exception of the cats).

Working at home while quarantining allowed me to catch up on book ordering, research the possibility of a new source of free e-books, search online for available disinfectants and hand sanitizers for the library, and peruse items that had been accumulating on my desk. One pearl of wisdom attributed to Lucille Ball caught my eye: "The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age." Another one: "You can have friends, or you can correct people's grammar," according to author and copy editor, Mary Norris.

Until next week, Happy Reading while Staying Safe!
