“There are more than 20,000 castles in Germany. Most of them are at least 100 years old and have been turned into museums, hotels, or cultural centers.” That is a fact I and several youngsters learned recently when Terrific Tuesdays began on June 13 in the meeting room here at Rhoads Memorial Library.

Children at the event also tasted soft pretzels (one of more than 3,000 kinds of bread in Germany) and learned how to make a racing spool car (paying homage to Germany’s no speed limit Autobahn).

The popular annual summer event, led by Felice Acker, local agent with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, is held in conjunction with our summer reading program. Since “All Together Now!” is the theme of our program and promotes peacefully coexisting with all people, Mrs. Acker is highlighting customs, traditions, and facts pertaining to a variety of our fellow denizens on Earth.

Meanwhile, we are still signing youngsters up for our summer reading program. Several children have completed enough reading goals to claim small prizes; continuing to read through July will gain them entry into a drawing for larger prizes. While our numbers are not as large as pre-COVID, they are the largest they’ve been in the past three years.

Adults may be interested in our newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout. They include: -”The Five-Star Weekend”, a novel by Elin Hilderbrand, where, after tragedy strikes, food blogger Hollis Shaw gathers four friends from different stages in their lives to spend an unforgettable weekend on Nantucket; -”The Time Has Come”, a thriller by Will Leitch, is described as “blending suspense, humor, and compassion via seven strangers and a very intense evening at a small-town Georgia pharmacy.”

-”The Nightingale Affair” by Tim Mason is called a “twisty new Victorian detective thriller featuring Inspector Charles Field who hunts a serial killer with a sinister signature targeting women in London and Florence Nightingale’s nurses in Crimea.”

We will be closed Tuesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. We will reopen at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5.

Until next week, come check us out!
