The arrival of October 2023 marks the end of my 11th year here at Rhoads Memorial Library. May year number 12 be a good one!

Tuesday, Oct. 17, is the date set for the first session of “Dave’s Tech Talk” in our meeting room at 10 a.m. David “Dave” Nelson will be conducting the free one-hour event to help anyone who has a question or issue with devices such as computers, tablets, or cell phones. I had mentioned in a September2023, “Library Lines” column that we hoped to offer this service; how often these tech sessions will be held will be determined by interest shown by the public.

Our display for the month of October was created in-house under the direction of our talented Sulema Oltivero. Assisted by Patty Padilla, a whimsical portrayal of a Halloween skeleton reading to young ghosts is featured, along with a few books ready for checkout. We have a displayer lined up for November but need one for December. If you would like to be a displayer or have an idea of who we could contact, call us at 806-647-3532.

September’s version of Young Scientists’ take-andmake kits almost flew out the door. October’s kits are here, ready to be picked up on a first come, first serve basis. They feature the subject of “Star Finder.” Felice Acker, local agent with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, provided the kits and hopes to do so monthly through May 2024.

Newly released books that have arrived and are ready for checkout include: -”An Amish Cinderella” (a novel) by Shelley Shepard Gray; -”Judgment Prey” (a Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers mystery) by John Sandford; -”Santa and Company” (a novel) by Fern Michaels; -”12 Months to Live” (a thriller) by James Patterson and Mike Lupica.

Another new release is “Mr. Texas” by Lawrence Wright. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author has written what critics call a “hilarious, sharply drawn send-up of Texas politics, where a dark-horse candidate risks his personal happiness for a career in the Texas House of Representatives.”

The story follows Sonny Lamb, an amiable, struggling rancher who has become a punchline in his Texas hometown, with such acts as buying his own bull at an auction. But he performs heroically when a fire breaks out at a neighbor’s farm, thereby making the evening news.

The news coverage gets the attention of an Austin lobbyist who entreats Sonny to run for his West Texas district’s seat in the state legislature. Navigating a life in politics will test Sonny’s marriage and morality as he learns the ropes of running a campaign and negotiating in the Lonestar State’s capital.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
