Beatrix Potter, a wellknown writer and illustrator, will be the topic of Dimmitt Book Club’s next meeting set for Wednesday, Nov. 8. It will begin at 2 p.m. here in our meeting room at Rhoads Memorial Library and will feature the film titled, “Miss Potter.” Libby Cleveland will screen the true story of Potter, who overcame a domineering mother and the chauvinism of Victorian England to become a best-selling author.

Prior to that day, our meeting room will be the site of another Dimmitt Cloverbuds and 4-H Kids’ gathering on Friday, Nov. 3. Since Dimmitt ISD has adopted a four-day school week, children have Fridays off. Felice Acker, local agent with the Texas A&M Extension Service, thought she would offer meetings once a month as a fun and educational experience.

The Cloverbuds, ages K-2nd grade, meet from 9:30 a.m. til 10:15 a.m. while the 4-H Kids, age 3rd grade and up, convene from 10:30 a.m. until noon. There is a fee for these events: register at www.4Honline.com or call their office at 806-647-4115 for more information.

Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 5, meaning our clocks “fall back” an hour. Now we can reclaim the hour of sleep that we lost when clocks had to “spring forward” last March.

That day will also feature the annual Thanksgiving meal at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Dine-in or carry out is available. A holiday bazaar will be held, too, starting at 10 a.m.

“Holiday in a Jar” will be offered on Monday, Nov. 6, at noon at the Castro County Extension office. A lunch will be provided as well as tips on making food items for gifts or to store for quick meals. A cookbook will be given to attendees, too.

Here is a reminder that Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7. If you have not cast your ballot during early voting, that is the final day to do so. Fourteen amendments to the Texas Constitution will be listed on the ballot.

That day will see the Methodist Church offer their annual Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Only take-outs will be available.

Remember that we will be closed Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. We will re-open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

Until next week, Happy Reading!
